DOT Annual Inspection Checklist
Every Class 8 truck and trailer needs an FMCSA-compliant inspection once every 12 months. This is the full checklist our certified inspectors at 1776 Big Rig run before the sticker goes on the door.
The Full Checklist

Brakes
- Service brake - pushrod travel within adjustment limits
- Brake lines and hoses - no cracks, chafing, leaks, or bulges
- Brake drums and rotors - no cracks reaching either edge
- Air brake system - compressor, governor, leaks under 2 psi/min single, 3 psi/min combo
- Low-air warning device functional below 60 psi
- Parking brake holds vehicle on grade
Coupling Devices
- Fifth wheel mounting bolts torqued and not cracked
- Locking jaws engage and lock fully on kingpin
- Pintle hooks and drawbars - no excessive wear
- Safety chains and breakaway cable present and functional
Exhaust System
- No leaks forward of or directly below sleeper or cab
- Pipes and mufflers secure and not patched with anything but factory parts
- DPF and after-treatment systems intact (where equipped)
Fuel System
- Tank securely mounted, no leaks
- Cap present and sealing
- Lines and hoses chafe-free
Lighting
- Headlamps, tail lamps, turn signals, marker lamps, ID lamps - all functional
- License plate lamp working
- Reflectors and conspicuity tape intact
Steering
- Steering wheel free play within limits (≤ 10° at 20" wheel)
- Steering column secure, U-joints tight
- Power steering hoses and lines leak-free
- Tie rods, drag link, pitman arm - no looseness
Suspension
- Springs - no broken leaves, no cracked or missing center bolts
- U-bolts torqued and not stretched
- Air bags free of leaks and chafing
- Shock absorbers secure (not necessarily functional under FMCSA, but we check)
Frame
- No cracks in frame rails or cross members
- Welds and rivets intact
- Body and cab mounts secure
Tires and Wheels
- Tread depth - 4/32" on steer, 2/32" on all others
- No sidewall cuts exposing cord, no bulges
- Wheels - no cracks, all lug nuts present and torqued
- Hub seals not leaking
Windshield, Wipers, Mirrors
- Windshield free of damage in the swept area
- Wipers and washers functional
- Both side mirrors present and adjustable
DOT Inspection Questions
How often does a commercial truck need a DOT inspection?+
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require a complete inspection at least once every 12 months (49 CFR 396.17). The annual inspection sticker must be displayed on the truck and the report kept on file for 14 months.
Who is allowed to perform a DOT annual inspection?+
A qualified inspector under 49 CFR 396.19 - at minimum someone with one year of training or experience as a brake or mechanic-inspector, plus a written test or equivalent training. Our shop techs hold the proper qualifications and we file the paperwork that goes with the sticker.
What's the difference between a DOT annual and a pre-trip inspection?+
The DOT annual is the comprehensive sign-off required once a year and is performed by a qualified inspector. A pre-trip is a daily driver-side walk-around required before every shift, focused on safety-critical items: brakes, lights, tires, coupling, leaks.
Can I drive a truck with an out-of-service violation?+
No. Anything tagged Out of Service in 49 CFR 396 Appendix G - brake adjustment failure, low air warning, missing safety chains, exposed cord in a tire - keeps the truck off the road until repaired and re-inspected.
How long does a DOT inspection take at 1776 Big Rig?+
Most clean trucks are 60-90 minutes. We aim to turn same-day inspections on appointment. Fleet accounts get bay priority and consolidated paperwork.
Can you do my CVSA Level 1 prep too?+
Yes. CVSA Level 1 follows the same FMCSA criteria with additional driver-side items (CDL, medical card, logs, HAZMAT). We pre-flight the full Level 1 list at customer request - bring the driver's paperwork in with the truck.
